Did you know that fire fighters train blinded?

I’ve been planning on joining the Firefighters but I couldn’t find any information about glasses/contacts. I wear prescription glasses (usually at night when I’m at home) and I also wear contacts for the majority of the day (10+ hours) also without them I’m pretty much blind, I have to put things right in front of my face to be able to see and read. I want to know if any of you firefighters wear glasses/contacts and if so how does that affect you?

Thing is that fires involve smoke, so wearing glasses won’t help your vision much when you can’t see 2 feet in front of you. Most of your training involves having your mask blacked out so you have to learn to work in zero visibility anyhow.

Very important: Always make sure you discuss and make decisions about your eye care based upon a formal appointment with your optician.
